Grant for Moors Railway

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Two substantial grants have been announced in support of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s “Bridge & Wheels” Appeal.

A grant of £300,000 has been awarded by North Yorkshire County Council and a grant of £100,000 has been awarded from the LEADER programme, designed to help rural communities regenerate.

This substantial support, combined with the funds already raised by the Moors Railway, moves the Appeal total to £610,000.

The Railway’s efforts to raise £650,000 by the year end in order to cover the cost of replacing a vital bridge, between Goathland and Grosmont, have moved a big step forward.

County Councillor John Fort, North Yorkshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways and Transportation, said that the authority had been pleased to lend their support to such an important transport-related scheme.

He said “When we were made aware of the condition of Bridge 30, between Goathland and Grosmont, we felt we had to do something. The council recognises the significant value of this heritage steam railway both as an important transport artery running through the National Park, linking moors and coast, and as a significant contributor to the local tourism economy.

By supporting the renewal of this vital piece of transport infrastructure, it will make all the difference and will help to safeguard the long term future of the Railway.”

Mike Horrocks, North York Moors Coast and Hills LEADER Programme Manager, said: “This is by far the largest grant that LEADER has awarded in the Moors, Coast and Hills area. It is a substantial sum for a substantial project. In agreeing to support the Moors Railway, the local communities will benefit in a number of ways. Firstly, by safeguarding the future of the Railway, we continue to support a number of communities along the line. Secondly, a small portion of the grant will be used to further develop projects that will bring even more tourists into the area. These are projects that will bring the communities together, to make even more of what they have to offer.”

Murray Brown, Chairman of the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust, said that the support was tremendous. He said “This is brilliant news. Everyone is pulling together. We are very close to our year-end goal and are hoping that those who have supported us through the year will help to give one last push to meet our £650,000 target.”

The Railway is hosting a Fundraising Ball this Saturday at the National Railway Museum in York. Amongst the guests will be the Appeal Patron, Pete Waterman.

RAILWAY APPEAL GIVEN THE TONIC – FUNDRAISING EVENT SHEDS LIGHT ON HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle will be on offer at a fundraising event in support of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s “Bridge & Wheels” Appeal.

The event, to be held on Tuesday, 17 November 2009 at the Memorial Hall, Pickering, starting at 6.30pm, will provide guests with an opportunity to discover the benefits from a range of Aloe Vera products, geared to improve skin condition, respiratory and immune systems.

Julie Christensen, a local independent distributor of Forever Living Products, will be on hand to demonstrate the products and share Christmas buying ideas.

The event will be free to attend, and Julie will donate a percentage of the profits on the night to the Railway’s “Bridge & Wheels” Appeal, that seeks to raise £1 million toward the cost of renewing a vital bridge on the Railway and the restoration of an historic steam engine.

Aloe vera is a succulent plant that conceals a pure inner gel that has been used for centuries to improve health and enhance beauty. It is marketed by Forever Living, founded in 1978 and now operating in 135 countries. Forever has become the largest grower, manufacturer and distributor of aloe vera and bee products in the world. Aloe vera is a versatile product, and can be taken as a drink or applied to the skin. It is not tested on animals but works just as well on animals as well as humans.

“I’d like as many people as possible to attend and find out more about these fantastic products” said Julie. “The products work just as well for men as they do women, so it would be wonderful to see a few of the engine drivers and firemen attending as well,” she said.

Walkers urged to put their best foot forward in support of Appeal

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Those who enjoy walking are being urged to put their best foot forward in aid of a good cause. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is planning a series of organised walks on the railway line from Goathland station, to the site of Bridge 30, on Sunday 8 November. The aim is to raise much needed funds for the Bridge & Wheels Appeal, which aims to raise £1m to fund a bridge renewal and restoration of an historic steam engine. The walk is about half a mile distance. Bridge 30 is located just north of Goathland, in the direction of Grosmont. Trains won’t be running on this stretch of line on 8 November, so it will give the public a unique perspective on the Moors and the Railway. They will see the 145 year old bridge, which has served the Railway well, but which is due to be removed over the winter period and replaced with a new structure. Anyone in good health and over the age of 10 can participate. Escorted tours are being planned to depart from Goathland Station on the hour, departing 10am, 11am, 12 noon and 1pm. For the privilege of seeing the Railway in a different light, participants are asked to make a £5 donation to the Bridge & Wheels Appeal. Advance booking is recommended. To reserve your place, contact Julie Christensen at the NYMR on 01751 473799 or email julie.christensen@nymr.co.uk .

Pete Waterman backs Bridge & Wheels Appeal

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Pete WatermanLegendary music producer and rail enthusiast, Pete Waterman, is giving his backing to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s “Bridge & Wheels” Appeal, which seeks to raise £1 million for a vital bridge replacement and the restoration of an historic steam engine.

He met recently with officials to be appraised of the progress of the Appeal, which seeks to raise sufficient funds to cover the cost of renewing Bridge 30, between Goathland and Grosmont, together with the cost of restoring a tank engine 80135, which is owned by the Railway.

Since its launch at the end of March, the Appeal has raised £170,000 through public donation including the generous support of the Railway’s own Members.   An additional £300,000 has been pledged by North Yorkshire County Council towards the bridge renewal as part of the Government’s commitment to transport-related projects in North Yorkshire over the next two years.   The Railway has also submitted an application for European assistance to the tune of £100,000 and should know the outcome in mid-September.

Bridge 30 lies about a quarter of a mile north of Goathland station in a remote location.  The bridge is over 150 years old and has become life expired.  It carries the railway over Eller Beck near Darnholme and needs to be removed and replaced over the winter months.    Engine 80135 is a 53 year old British Railways standard class 2-6-4T tank engine.   The loco was originally built at Brighton loco works in 1956 and now needs to undergo a complete restoration so that it can be brought back into use with regularity.

Pete WatermanCommenting on his decision to back the Appeal, Mr Waterman said:

“This is unquestionably one of the best heritage steam railways in the country.    When I heard about the Appeal I realised immediately just how significant this is.   It deserves our support.   The NYMR is vital to the future well-being of the heritage steam railway movement.  It is also vital to the local and regional economy, bringing as it does some 300,000 visitors into North Yorkshire and contributing some £30 million per year into the economy.   I am giving the Appeal my full backing and would encourage all who have visited the Railway and who wish it to continue, to get behind the Appeal.”

Mr Waterman, who was last seen at the Moors Railway in September 2008, opening a newly constructed carriage works, has agreed to be the Guest of Honour at a Fundraising Ball in support of the Appeal on Saturday, 28 November, at the National Railway Museum.   It is a black tie dinner featuring live music and a wealth of attractive raffle prizes.  A total of 500 seats are available for purchase, at a cost of £50 per head and anyone wishing to purchase tickets, or join the list of sponsors, can find out more by contacting the event co-ordinator, Lesley Benham, at Lesley.benham@nymr.co.uk or by calling 01751 473799.

Grand Central Railway has already given its commitment to act as a sponsor.   Entertainment will be provided by the New York Dance Band.  Yorkshire-based singer-songwriter, Sarah McCluskey, will also perform, to mark the launch of her debut album “Last Train Home”.  The unsigned artist collaborated with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in order to use photography for her new debut Album and has agreed for a percentage of the sales from her new album to be dedicated to the Appeal.
